Busting Common Supplement Myths

There are many tried and tested methods of building muscle and increasing health through the use of supplements. Unfortunately there are many unsubstantiated rumours out too there which contradict expert advice and may in turn be confusing.

Separating the fact from the fiction isn't easy so we have put together this quick guide to help you see past the myths and find a suitable regime for your individual needs and fitness goals.

1. If you eat a healthy diet you don't need supplements

Of course a healthy, nutritious and well balanced diet is paramount in ensuring that that your body is working to the best of its ability. That said, those looking at building extra muscles, seriously enhancing their track times, their weight lifting ability or sporting prowess need something extra. All supplements cater to different needs however many, such as proteins work to not only build the body but to kick-start and maintain the repair functions that are so important when training as your body finds itself under a higher amount of stress than it would be otherwise.

2. Using a protein supplement makes you fat

Where this "fact" comes from no-one knows however anyone with an ounce of experience or knowledge regarding the way that the body works will tell you that the only way that you will put on excess fat is when you are eating an excessive amount of calories, more so even than your training routines require.

3. You can buy supplements anywhere, they are all the same

This is not only untrue; it is also an extremely dangerous statement. Firstly, buying cheap as chips supplements from Ebay or similar places simply means that could be ingesting anything. When you decide to buy from anyone other than a reputable supplement retailer you are potentially putting your health at risk.

As well as this it is important to remember that even though a "knock-off" supplement may be what it says on the bottle, that it isn't necessarily of a decent quality. The only way that you can rely on your supplements is to buy trusted brands from well-known and reputable retailers.

4. Supplements have dangerous side effects

Of course when ingesting anything you should be aware of what it is that you are putting into your body however in the case of health and fitness supplements the vast majority of ingredients are natural ingredients, many of which are already found in your own body. These supplements simply give a boost or extra dose of what your body needs in order to reach its full potential.

5. Supplements are illegal

Supplements are used across the athletic and sporting world by male and females whose bodies require additional nutrients in order to withstand the rigours of training and to improve their overall health and fitness. Steroids on the other hand are not the same as supplements which are potentially very dangerous to an athlete's health and are illegal. A sportsperson using steroids would be struck off or disqualified, while anyone using a proper supplement such as whey protein or fat burners has nothing to worry about.

There are so many myths out there regarding what you can take, what you can't, what is right and what is wrong. Some of these so-called supplement "facts" are pure rubbish and thankfully most people who are starting out in training realise this very quickly.

If you are unsure about what supplements are suitable or what effect they may have then discuss your needs with your trainer or contact us.
